It still seems like he was born yesterday.
I can remember him looking at me, and I cried tears of Joy and tears of understanding that someone would be looking up to me as their role model.
Looking up to me to teach them what I knew about God. I cried, too, because I was a young mother.
I realized at that moment I would have to think about this tiny human when making any and every decision.
I started creating images in my head of what our life would be like. I wanted him to see me working hard and accomplishing my goals. I wanted my son to know that whatever he put his mind to, he could achieve it. He saw me do just that and more.
I tried to live a life that was pleasing to God, based on my understanding of God, because I wanted my son to learn to love God.
My understanding and knowledge of God changed with time as I read the word, and God introduced Himself to me in ways my human mind, in some seasons, could not understand.
Now, the years have gone by, and it seemed like just yesterday I was holding him in my arms, and I cry again at times because he is no longer a baby, a young boy, but a young man.
I still have influence over his life, but it is no longer precedent.
He is walking out into the world. A world I consider uncharted territory because indulgence in sin and walking away from Biblical principles is the world that we are living in. The hearts of men have grown cold.
He is making choices of his own. He is searching for his independence and trying to find where he fits in the puzzle of life. He is seeking after his interests, which is understandable, but there are so many distractions in this day and age that all lead to destruction. Satan, the enemy of humanity, is also working feverishly to destroy anyone who plays into his hands and indulges in his kingdom of darkness. He knows he is running out of time. Destruction has always been his agenda.
What I have now, as his mother, is the memory of the seeds I was able to plant, and now I watch to see them take root in good ground by the working of the Holy Spirit.
Mother friend, be intentional with what you sow into the lives of your children.
While I wait to see the good seeds sowed grow and take root in his life, I do not need to worry because before I was blessed with my son, there was an eternal plan for my son’s life by his Heavenly Father.
My son and everything about him has been engraved into the hands of the Lord.
Isaiah 49:16: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
Our children are not here by chance. They were each created with an eternal purpose in mind.
I do not need to carry guilt for the areas where I feel I could have invested more as a mother.
Friend, there are no perfect parents; we have all made mistakes on the parenting journey.
God’s plan for my son’s life supersedes every plan I had or might still have and every seed that was planted intentionally and unintentionally.
Whether we acknowledge it or not, there is always a battle raging over our souls and over the souls of our children. In fact, over humanity.
All my children belong to the Kingdom of Light, and all I can do now that my son is at an age where he is making decisions on his own is use the weapon that is mighty in the pulling down of strongholds.
I can pray. I can speak living words over his life. I will be here for him always, but for now, while he figures life out. I will war in the Realm of the Spirit for him. I will give him room while I speak to God about His son.
How can we, as parents, not feel the weight of eternity when our children are not entirely under our influence? Eternity is a very long time to sit with our hands folded.
I know God is in control. I know I can trust Him, but for now, I want to pray. Praying for my son cannot harm him. Only the will of God can be done in his life when I pray. I encourage you also to pray, Mother Friend.
We must war for our children!
I find that when my son was younger, my actions and decisions that concerned him were driven by my desire for him to be functional in life here on earth. I still desire that, but now that is not my main focus as I have grown as a mother and have a better understanding of the Kingdom of Light and the Kingdom of Darkness that is in a war for souls. I now desire more than anything for my son to know, love God and live a life pleasing to Him.
When we walk in the will of God, only good things can come to us.
So, I will pray as the Holy Spirit leads.
A Prayer For My Only Son
Lord, You gave my son to me. You knew him before the foundations of this Earth. You know the plans You have for him. I thank You for trusting me with your beloved son. Lord, I thank You for equipping him with every good gift that he needs to accomplish Your will in this earthly life. Thanks, Lord, that You are a Faithful Father, and You will watch over Your words spoken over his life to perform it.
Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:12: “The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
I know Your plans for my son’s future are good. I trust You to work out Your will for his life because You are all-knowing and all-powerful.
Lord, many are the plans of my heart, but Your purpose for my son’s life will stand.
Proverbs 19:21: “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”
Lord, more than anything, cause my son to pursue Your plans for his life. I pray that You will grant him wisdom, knowledge and understanding to discern Your perfect will for his life and to have an unstoppable drive to pursue Your will.
Lord, I pray like Solomon prayed that You will grant my son the ability to discern between good and evil. Let him always choose to blatantly stand for what is good in Your eyes and outright reject any and everything or anyone who chooses a path to evil things. Things that seem right but lead to eternal death.
1 Kings 3:9: “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”
I pray he will not be influenced by any negative wave or every evil agenda being pushed by the kingdom of darkness but that he will be like a tree planted by the water, bringing forth fruit in due season. You are Living Water Loving Father; let him seek to live in You.
Ephesians 4:14: “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.”
Jeremiah 17:8: “They will be like a tree planted by the Water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
Give my son wisdom, Lord, to understand the seasons of life so that he will adjust his mindset based on Godly insights and live fearlessly following your Spirit-led instruction.
Place a love for the Living Word in his heart. You are the Living Word. Like David, let him hide Your will in his heart. Lord, become my son’s moral compass. Be the foundation of every choice he will make in his lifetime. Teach my son that those who choose Your ways have life. Let him understand that You are the light he needs on the dark paths of life. Teach him that those who walk with You will never fall.
Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 139:12 “Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
Psalm 119:11″I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.”
Lord, You are the great Husbandman. I pray that You will cut away everything in my son’s life that originated out of the kingdom of darkness. Remove all the scales from his eyes that would prevent him from seeing and understanding the devil’s schemes.
Lord, work out in my son’s life love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith and temperance.
Galatians 5: 22-23 ” But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Please help him understand that there are two kingdoms, one of light and one of darkness. Let him hate anything that originates in the realm of darkness. Let him find anything that originates in evil distasteful.
My son is now at a stage in which he has interests in the opposite sex. Let him never seek to prove to the world how much of a man he is by the number of young ladies he is able to date. But train his eyes and his heart to search out a God-fearing woman who will help him grow even stronger in his faith. Let him understand that true beauty comes from within.
Proverbs 31:30 “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”
Help my son to find someone who is trustworthy. Someone who will seek to always do good to him and not evil.
Someone who is confident within themself and seeking out God’s eternal plans for their life also.
Someone who is loving, caring, and kind.
Someone who will love and honour him.
Someone who will always lead him to Godly paths when the storms of life rage.
I pray that his eyes will be open to every ungodly woman who will seek to pull him into the kingdom of darkness. I pray You will give him the ability to see and understand the motives and hearts of any young woman who shows interest in him. I pray he will never be a victim of satan’s weapons of manipulation and control. But that his spirit eyes opened by the Holy Spirit will see people not in the flesh but in the realm of the Spirit.
Place in my son a hunger for righteousness.
A hunger for Your will and ways. Teach him to always choose Your will over the desires of his flesh.
Galatians 6:8 “Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”
Matthew 26:41″Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The Spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Help him to fully understand the grace that was given to him when You went on the cross and gave Your life for him because when he understands Your love for him unto death, he will never be the same.
Make his heart like water in Your hands Lord.
Bring my son into an understanding that You are a Faithful Father, and You will never leave him or forsake him. Help him to understand that You will never stop loving him and that whenever he falls down in life and asks for forgiveness, You will forgive him. You will pick him up. Lord, if ever his heart is broken, remind him wherever he is that You are close to the brokenhearted, and nothing under the sun can separate us from Your love.
Teach him that Your love for us is not based on our performance but on Your character. You are Love.
Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit.”
Romans 8:37-39: ” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ” For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Lord, take complete control of my son’s life. Take control of his emotions, take control of his mind. Take control of his body. Let my son desire to surrender all that he is to You. Teach my son to exercise self-control when he finds himself in situations that are tempting and gratifying to the flesh but will have a negative effect on him spiritually. Please help him to understand that actions always have consequences.
Lord, I know it is not easy, but You will be his strength when his heart is surrendered to You.
Zachariah 4:6 “So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
1 Corinthians 10:13
Help my son to walk in the understanding that no temptation will come his way except what is common to mankind. And You oh God are faithful; You will not let him be tempted beyond what he can bear. But when he is tempted, God, You will also provide a way out so that he can endure it.
2 Timothy 1:17
I pray that my son will understand that the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
Proverbs 25:28
Help my son to see a lack of self-control like a city whose walls are broken through.
Romans 12:1-2
Help my son, in view of God’s mercy, to offer his body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is his true and proper worship.
I pray my son will not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of his mind. Then he will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.
Proverbs 16:32
Help my son to understand better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.
Proverbs 18:21
Help my son to understand that the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Teach my son that in the face of every human mountain, every human impossibility, he is the son of the Most High God who says in every impossible situation, He will always make a way.
Isaiah 43:19: “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
Teach my son to have faith that believes everything in Your word and to trust that whatever You promise in Your word, You will watch over it to perform it.
Teach him that faith in God looks out of this natural realm into the realm of the Spirit.
Teach him that when he feels surrounded, You are in him, and he is never alone.
1 John 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Teach my son to always hope in You, Lord, when a season of life becomes long and tiresome because You are the Good Shepherd, and You promise to walk through all the valley seasons of our lives with us.
John 10:14-15 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Jeremiah 29:11 Teach my son/remind him of the plans You have for his life, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give him a future and a hope.
Romans 15:13 God of hope fill my son with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit he may abound in hope.
Romans 12:12: Teach my son to rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Isaiah 40:31 Teach my son that they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Place a desire in my son to talk with You every day in prayer. Help him to understand that prayer is not fancy words but whatever is on his heart that He wishes to tell his Living, Loving Father who listens.
Matthew 6:6: “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “
Philippians 4:6 Teach my son to not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let his requests be made known to God.
Mark 11:24: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Romans 8:26 Help my son to understand, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Lord, in all things, keep eternity always on his mind. Let him always desire eternity with You. Help him to understand that there is life after this one, and eternity is a very long time to be out of Your presence. Let him understand that at the end of life, You have prepared a place for him, and when he chooses You where You are, there he will be also.
Lord, again, I pray that You will open his eyes to see that Satan, the enemy of our souls, has no plans but torment and eternal torture prepared for those who reject You and seek to live out life gratifying their flesh. You, oh Lord, are eternal peace, love, and joy.
Where he hurts, bring healing to my son. Lord. It is hard to walk through life and not experience pain and hurt. I pray that in every painful situation, You will lead my son to healing by encouraging him to forgive always. Teach him that lack of forgiveness is a door the enemy will walk through and fill his heart with hate, anger, bitterness, rejection and stagnation. Let him choose to lay every situation that is too heavy for him to carry at Your feet.
Mathew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Lord, You are our Loving Father, and I trust You with my son’s life. Lord, have Your way always in his life. I thank You, Father, that I can speak to you and you listen. I thank You that I can pray and ask for Your will over my son’s life because You listen and You answer prayers. Today, I ask for your will, and I know what I ask for my son’s life that I will receive!
Amen
John 16:24 “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”
I hope this prayer encourages you to pray for your children and their future more intensely and intentionally. I know there are many other areas that I can pray about, and I will do so by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
I know the Lord is also sharing with you what he wants you to pray over your children. Feel free to share with me so that I can pray what the Father has laid on your heart over my children, and I can also help you to pray for your children.
Feel free to share with any mother who might need these words of encouragement or a prayer to start praying over their children intentionally.
