The Call Of The Modern Day Samaritan

November 8, 2020

As I climbed the stairs I could feel the tears building up behind my eyes. I moved as quickly as I could. I did not want my husband or son to see me crying. The day was so rough and I just wanted to make it to the shower to talk to God and pour out my heart and the events of the day to Him. As I stood before the shower the tears started to mix in with the water flowing down my face.

As I cried out to God He allowed me to do just that and He held me in his arms and allowed me to blow off the steam that accumulated throughout the day. I wanted to accomplish more out of the day and I could not. I was tired and needed a break but I could not have one. My hormones were not helping either and so I cried.

As I held onto Him and stopped to listen to what My father would say to help me feel better. He said “Kim you are so blessed.” “All your needs have been met.” “You excel in anything you put your hands to.” “Your kids are healthy.” “Your family is safe.” “You have good health.” “Yes, today you are tired and the day did not go exactly as you planned for it to.” “You gave more of yourself.” “You feel tired and drained, but I met all your needs according to my riches in glory.”

I started to cry again because instead of seeing how tired I was, I was seeing how great God has always been in my life and continued to be on a daily basis. There was not a time I could look back on in my life where He did not work things out for my good. As I looked back into time I saw all the mountains that stood before me that seemed impossible and impassable and He made them into leveled grounds.

Psalm 144:1-2 says “Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge.”

Psalm 18:32-36

“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.

He continued to speak, He said “Now is not the time to feel sorry for yourself and throw a pity party.” “Look around you. Do you see how many people are suffering?”

He said to me, “People are hurting.” “They have lost loved ones. They are battling terminal illnesses. The world is so cold and they are alone. There are many people hurting and they do not know that I am the answer to the mountains and raging seas they are facing. You were born into a family that taught you to trust me and you know you can always run to me because I am your wall of defence, I am your protector.I will speak to your storms, and if I allow them to rage they work for your good.”

He then said to me, “The Good Samaritan.” I could see in the realm of the spirit people who were wounded and on their last, left on the wayside of life.

God in compassion moved me from seeing only my wants, to seeing how blessed I am and ultimately seeing the needs of others.

I started to cry again but this time I was not crying for me. I was crying for those whose life circumstances and situations had left them at the wayside to die. I was crying for the people who did not know God as their Lord and Saviour. I was crying for moms with special needs children who require more from their caretakers. I was crying for the homeless, the hungry, the sick, the lonely and the old approaching the end of their life reflecting on their own. I was crying for the people who lost hope – people who were by the wayside who had given up and were basically waiting for life to leave them because they had lost hope, humanity had failed them and they do not know that God can make a way out of nothing or that God’s specialization is loving the unloveable. They don’t understand that His mission on Earth was to cater to the sick.

Mark 2:17 “Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

I could think of many people I could reach out to. Then it crossed my mind that there are many of our friends, family members and strangers who manage to put the best outside but are dying on the inside. They have the biggest smile on their faces, pretending they are well, when their hearts are like cushions pierced with pins and needles. The pain and troubles of life have taken a hold of their hearts and they are hopeless. They wear the masks on their faces while their hearts are being covered in darkness.

I said, “ Lord, please continue to help me to see through the facades that people put up in order to reach and help as many hurting people as I can.” I prayed this prayer because even I have had experiences in life that darkened the clouds of my life and Jesus out of His abundance of love, grace and mercy performed open-heart surgery on me removing the residue of the firery darts that were sent to destroy me – darts that were orchestrated to drain the life out of me. I am so thankful for the love and compassion of my father and the people He positions in the seasons of life to encourage me when life forces me to my knees. We have all had and will have experiences that sweep our feet from under us. I am so glad that as a child of the most high God that the weapons may form but will never prosper. Shouldn’t our experiences help us to be more sensitive to those around us?

When I came out of the shower I took up my Bible and I read the story of the Good Samaritan. Not once did the story refer to what the Good Samaritan stood to gain. Today as Christians God is calling us to love without measure and reach out to those who are hurting even when we are too. He is calling us to love when nothing is in it for us. Is this not what Jesus did? I have found that when I extend myself to reach out to those who are hurting, it brings invaluable joy and happiness into my life.

I must say, humanity is so flawed and the very people you take the time to help will later at times forget your kindness but we are called to be kind anyway. This is why when we are called to help others we must not do so in order to be seen by man but to do the will of our father. When Jesus walked on Earth He helped many and only a few returned to say thanks but He helped them anyway. Helping them did not take away from His character. He found great joy in doing the will of His father.

1 Corinthians 10:31-33

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God, even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.”

As I read and pondered, the Holy Spirit told me to find people on the wayside and help them in any way that I can. Helping someone does not have to mean monetary help. Helping someone can be:

  1. Sharing the word of God with them.
  2. Giving them a word of encouragement.
  3. Making a call to ask someone how they are doing.
  4. Sharing your testimony of the times  God came through for you, filling them with hope that God will show up for them also.
  5. Giving them some of your time which can take the form of a listening ear.
  6. Providing a meal for some one who is hungry.

I am sure there are many other ways we can lend a helping hand.

When seeking to help others pray for discernment from God. There are people in this life that have learned to manipulate situations in their favour and will prey on people with a heart inclined to help those in need.

The story of the Good Samaritan is in the Bible for us as Christians today to understand that life can be cold to anyone. The man on the wayside was travelling when he was attacked by thieves and robbers. I am sure he did not stand around waiting to be beaten and robbed. Yet he was a victim of the environment in which he was travelling. On this journey called life, who knows what awaits around each bend but God himself? The good thing for us as Christians is that it does not matter what is around the bend because Jesus is in our past, present and future and promises that all things will work together for the good of those that love Him.

In 2 Chronicles 16:9 He says “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the Earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.

As Christians let us continue to pray that the Holy Spirit will help us to remain in God’s divine timing and arrangements over our lives and the lives of our family. Let us pray to remain patient and for continuous wisdom and understanding to the fact that God does not need our help to work out the details of our lives.

As Christians let us answer the call of the Modern Day Samaritan, reaching out to those who are hurting so deeply they have given up on life and have lost all hope. Let us reach broken hearts hiding behind fake smiles. Let us reach out to those who are facing their mountains and raging seas. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with wisdom, understanding and compassion as we move among the wounded with even our own wounds, igniting hope in the hopeless. Let us be light in the darkness. Let us reach out to those in need not looking for earthly acknowledgment but storing up for ourselves treasures in Heaven. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to help us see beyond ourselves just as Jesus did!

Matthew 6: 19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on Earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

My Prayer For You

Today if you are facing a mountain or raging sea I pray the Holy Spirit will comfort you. I pray that God will place people in your seasons of life to encourage you along the way. I pray that if you are not yet saved, the Holy Spirit will open your eyes to the glorious grace and mercy that has been extended to you at no cost. I pray that if your heart is in pain the Holy Spirit will remove the darts. I pray today that the Holy Spirit will reveal to you that He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother and will never leave you.

I pray that if life has swept you off your feet, if you have lost hope, or if you feel like outright mess the Holy Spirit will remind you There is no place you can go where the love of God will not find you. His love for us is relentless. Amen

Psalm 139:7-12

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,”

even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.
